Instructions
--------------

There are several different parts to the scenario, Enemy of God, each of them is in a seperate zip file.

1) Create a folder under c:/mps/civ2/scenarios/ called enemy.
2) create seperate folders called enemy1, enemy2, enemy3, enemy4, enemy5. for each of the zips.
3) unzip the files into the appropriate folders.
4) When you read the message "load the next part" or something like that, Toggle Cheat Mode
and select "Save as Scenario" save it in the next folder. For example when you finish part 2, toggle cheat mode, select save as scenario, and save it in part 3. Always save it as Enemy.scn.
5) Then simply close your game, select "Begin Scenario" at the civ2 start, and select the scenario you have just saved.
6 ) You must always play as the Dumnonians.
7 ) You must always play on Diety (Pendragon) Level.

--------------------------
Changes from Version 2.3
--------------------------

* Added a filler event in the later half of part 3, its just a little something to keep you busy :).
* Added the "Kernow" unit that appears to aid you throughout the game, this unit represents the fiercely independent spirit of a people who were never conquered by the Romans.
* Toned down the dragon in part 4 a bit.
* I have given the Gwent a strong new Defensive unit, the Victrix. This represents the last of the Roman Defenders on the island. Periodically they might get more from Anthemius every now and then. I added these units to make the conquest of Gwent a little more difficult (admit it, they rolled over before!).
* Remade the concept of Airbases. The old "Shrine" resource in the Forests are now "Ruins." Instead throughout Powys, Dumnonia, Ireland, and the unsettled areas there are airbases ("Shrines") for your Sidhe and Dockalfen to use to paradrop from.
* Changed the texts for Amphibious Assaults to Coastal Raids
* Added the "Missionary" unit to the Gwents from part 1 on.
* Added the Sais "Trader" unit in Part 5
* Fixed the Defender bug
* Added a "horse thief" event in each part, if you kill a saxon raider you get a horseman and if they kill your horseman they get a raider.

--------------------------
Changes from Version 2.2
--------------------------

* Pellinore is now a Domain 3 Unit
* Arthur has a shield
* Two New Heros, Tristan in Part 1 and Percival in Part 4
* Dunum and Venta impossible to attack until part 3
* Changes to the events.txt
* History.txt finished
* Readme.txt expanded
* Now you can build the Eifel Tower (Runes) in part 2 to aid with negotiating peace with Powys.
* A new event has been added to make Building the Sacrificial Rites easier, Gawain helps you after you rescue him.
* New "Iscan" graphic
* Many new changes to part 5, addtion of Bards and remaing of pollution, and changes to the game.txt

....other changes I can't think of right now....:)

Important Notes
----------------

1 ) Don't go charging off with your heros unsupported. Sure they are good but they aren't invincible. Two or three normal enemy units can usually kill one. If one of them dies, its your fault.

2 ) Airbases have been renamed Shrines. In the forests of Britain you can see them here and there. These can be used to paradrop from by certain magical units you will get in the game.

3 ) Stonehenge has a great defense modifier. If you are in the area and badly injured you could try running for that area and hiding there.

4 ) During Part 2 DO NOT ATTACK THE CITIES DUNUM OR VENTA.

5 ) During Part 1 YOU MUST RETAKE BENOIC AND THEN GET ON CADDWG'S BOAT AND LET THE FRANKS RETAKE THE CITY. The goal is to evacuate those guys, not just to retake the city.

6 ) In Part 5 the "Bard" unit is a settler for you to get rid of the Divine Influence.

Units
-------------

PART I
------------

Farmers
Built By - Everyone
Graphic -- Jesus Balsindes Alba de America
Every British Nation can build farmers, they are basic settler units, worthless in a fight and fairly cheap to build.

Balise
Built by - Nil. Uniuqe Unit belonging to Dumnonia
Grahpic -- Mr. Tembas The Winter King :)
Balise is the oldest of the Dumnonian druids. He has the abilities of an engineer and if you complete a mission in time he will be able to build the Ghost Fences that will deter the enemy. He is alpine and can see for two squares. He also ignoes the zones of control so he makes a decent scout.

Levies
Built By -- Everyone
Graphic -- Harlan Thompsons Ancient Unit Pack
Armed farmers, very cheap but worthless in combat.

Spearmen
Built By -- Everyone
Graphic -- Mr. Tembas The Winter King
The backbone of the infantry at this point in time consisted of spearmen. You would be surprised how complicated battles can get with just swords, spears and shields. The spearmen would advance towards each other Phalanx style, sometimes armies faced off for hours before charging each other. Then the spears would crush into each other and the battle would become a pushing contest. Men behind the shield bearers would draw short swords and stab under and above the shields, trying to wound the other side.

Highlanders
Built By -- One Barbarian City (and one tribe in Part 5)
Graphic -- Jesus Balsindes Units (Modified)
Tough northmen, ala Braveheart. You probably won't have any contact with them. Highlanders have a two space visibility, ignore zones of control, ignore city walls and can make coastal raids.

Blackshields
Built By -- Three Barbarian Cities
Graphic -- To be honest, I forget.
Irish raiders. They raid anyone on the British Coast. Unlike the spearwalls of the british and sais they fight chaotically. Thats why they almost always loose. Blackshields see for two spaces and ignore zones of control.

Bloodshields
Built By -- Two Barbarian Cities
Graphic -- Harlan Thompsons Ancient Unit Pack
The feared warriors of Lleyn, the answer to Diwrnach. Diwrnach landed a few years ago and quickly slaughtered the Britons and Irish who were living there. Now his feared horsemen carve up their victims and pin them to the walls of his fortress. While they are still alive. Bloodshields ignore zones of control, can see for two spaces and can make sudden appearances.

Victrix
Built by -- No one, Gwent Event Unit
Graphic -- Alex the Magnificents Spartacus (Modified)
The Roman 6th Victrix was for all practical purposes the last legion on the British Islands. In real history the roman emperors NEVER sent aid of any worth to the Britons, that was left to St. Germanus (see history.txt for more info), however in this scenario Anthemius has developed a kind enough heart to send some groups of the Victrix back to Gwent every once in a while. They are very powerful defenders.

Christians
Built By -- Benoic
Grahpic -- Mr. Tembas The Winter King :)
Fanatics that belive Christ will return and the day of judgement will come in the year 500 so they are inflicting as much pain in his name as possible. Worthless in combat. They are the "fanatic" unit.

Loyalist
Built By -- No one.
Graphic -- Alex the Magnificents Ancient Units (Modified)
"Partisan" units. Every nation gets them. They ignore zones of control.

Frankish Infantry
Built By -- Franks
Grahpic -- Beats me. I don't know.
The Barbarians at the gate of Rome, who trounced the city. These are the soldiers of Clovis the ones who sacked Rome. Watch out for these guys, they aren't so good at defense but they have one of the best attack values of a non-unique unit in the game. The Frankish Infantry ignores city walls.

Troop Launch
Built By -- No one (until Part 3)
The boats the Franks use to cross the channel. They are better than the Fishing Boats becasue they don't sink when they leave the coast.

Shock Troop
Built By -- No one (until Part 2)
Graphic -- Created for this sceanrio. Based on a unit in the Ancient Units Pack.
Shock Troops are the vicious Frankish warriors that win battles through guerilla actions and such. The Frankish Elite. They are even better at attack than the dreaded Frankish Infantry. At this point the number of these brutes in Brittania is limited, at this time. Shock Troops ignore zones of control and can make coastal raids.

Cullwch
Built By -- nil. Unique Unit.
Grahpic -- Harlan Thompsons Mongols
Cullwch is a hero of Brittania that is defending Benoic against the Franks. Hopefully you will be able to recruit his aid against the Sais as well. Cullwch Ignores Zones of Control and City walls and he has two space visibility.

Axeman
Built By -- Sais (Saxons and Aenglish)
Graphic -- Harlan Thompsons Ancient Unit Pack
The backbone infantry of the Sais. They used the broadaxe that was not as well balanced as a sword but very useful in cutting wood to make a new home. That is why the saxons came to Britain after all, they were forced out by Clovis and the East Britons didn't put up much of a fight. Axeman have a better attack, but worse defense than spearmen.

Gwent Infantry
Built By -- Gwent
Grahpic -- Once again I'm stumped :(
Gwents Infantry practiced and drilled in the style of the Romans who were ruling this land not too long ago. They even dressed in whatever old Roman stuff they could find, breastplates and tunic and even the helmets. Gwent Infantry have comparable statistics to your spearmen.

Fishing Boat
Built By -- All but Franks
Graphic --- umm...er....uh....
The only naval unit buildable to anyone except the franks. Not very seaworthy at all, they will crash if far away from the coastline.

Wolftail
Built By -- Event units for Dumnonians
Graphic -- I'll get back to you.....
The Wolftails are the Dumnonians in Brittania who fight against the Franks covertly and protect the refugees that have fled across the channel. Thier days are numbered, there are simply too many Franks for them to recruit many more. Wolftails treat all terrain as roads, ignore zones of control, and can see for two spaces.

War Dog
Built By -- Saxons and Aenglish
Graphic -- Original. Taken from "Wizardy V"
Saxon War Dogs were unleashed right before their spearmen attacked. The dogs would throw themselves at weak points in the shieldwall and try to break a hole in it for the rest of the army to pour through. To illustrate this War Dogs are missile type units, as in the die when they attack, but they can take out wounded units very easily. Against healthy horsewarriors they don't stand much of a chance.

Kernow
Built By -- No one. Random Event Dumnonian Unit.
Grahpic -- Alex the Magnificents Conquest of the Fare North. Very Modified.
These are the warriors of Kernow, a hardy, very independent nation that was never captured by the Romans. Their loyalty is hard to come by, use them wisely. Kernow warriors ignore zones of control and city walls.

Villages
Built By -- No one. Owned by all tribes, scattered across the map.
Graphic -- Harlan Thompsons Ancient Unit Pack (Modified)
In the early game when you plunder a village you steal their money. This won't last very long because soon they will figure out how to hide their valuables.

Horsewarriors
Built By -- Powys and Dumnonia
Grahpic -- Mr. Tembas The Winter King
Only the British tribes used Cavalry in history, it didn't seem to stop the Sais much. In this scenario Horsewarriors (the best basic unit in the game) can only be built by Powys and Dumnonia. Horsewarriors ride heavy horses, stirrups weren't yet invented at this point in Britain so to attack they would almost have to come to a hault so they wouldn't fall off their horse. No matter how heavy and brave the horse they wouldn't charge a fortified spearmen position. I have no way of reconstructing that in the scenario.

Fortresses
Built By -- no one, owned by everyone, scatterd all over the map.
Grahpic -- Harlan Thompsons Ancient Unit Pack
Every nation has fortresses at their border. While they are tough to kill they are no where near impossible to beat, remember these aren't castles.

Masterless
Built By -- No one.
Grahpic -- Microprose Samurai
Masterless units are the mercenaries and convicts that fight for money or thier lives. Because they are so sneaky and a lot of them have been thieves, they ignore zones of control.

Cauldron
Built By -- No one
Grahpic -- Mr. Temba
The Cauldron of Clyddno Eiddyn that you need to recover in order to win the game.

African Mercenaries
Built By -- No one.
Grahpic -- Mr. Temba
Using Sagaramors contacts you can recruit other mercenaries from Nubia as well.

Pirates -- Coastal Raiders, not very quick but alpine. They can attack from fishing boats, this happened all the time during this age. Pirates aren't very good in normal combat but you might want to make them to establish beachheads in saxon frontiers and stuff like that.

Raiders -- Sometimes the Saxons will manage to steal your horses and make thier own mounted units. These units are Raiders and they have very similar stats to your horsewarriors.

Warlord -- Each nation randomly gets Warlords. Back in the time before politics the Warlord was the most important person in a nation other than the ruler himself. Warlords are very good units on both attack and defense, if you see an enemy has one take it out as soon as possible.

Strategy
-------------

------------
PART I
------------

In the first part there are several main goals.

1) Destroy Eluned

The city/kingdom of Eluned has declared war on Dumnonia. You must use your horsewarriors and spearmen to destroy it and the surrounding fortresses. Be sure to defend Ynys Wydryn as well. Ynys Wydryn is the home of Merlin (who has been gone for about five years) and has two important wonders. The Tor and Pagan Frevor. The latter provides extra production to YOUR ENTIRE CIVILIZATION. You must defend this city, be sure it is not destroyed. Once you invade Eluned the next problem should present itself....

2) Brittania

During Roman years many British citizens fled to what is now France to escape the Picts and Jutes that raided at will. These citizens are now being attacked by Clovis of the Franks. Two British Kingdoms are in Normandy, Broceliande and Benoic. Both of these kingdoms have spent way to much money on Bards and Poets and not enough on warriors. They are sparks of light in the dark ages and their libraries will be a great loss to all mankind. But when they are invaded Arthur has to send warriors, if just to take the cities back and hold them until you can evacuate. Caddwg of Mai Dun has the only boat that is fast enough to save you.

3) Wescs last Army

Wesc/Aesc is a Saxon Warlord who has a non aggresive style of invasion. In this part of the scenario he is in his last days, Cerdic and Aelle will land and start a wave on conquest the likes of which have never been seen. However Aescs last large army has been gathered and is marching on Dumnonia and Gwent. Melwas of the Belgic Lands (Benoic) has reached an "agreement" by bribing Aesc so he won't attack The Belgic Lands. You will have to go out and fight the Sais. Take the fight to them, send your horsewarriors through the Belgic Lands, you will have to find ways around hundreds of levies, spearmen, christians and farmers, but hunt down the saxon axemen, levies, spearmen and war dogs. Kill em all!

----------
Part II
----------

In part three there are several goals....

1 ) Find the Cauldron of Clyydno Eiddyn

We have all heard about the association of Arthurs Knights with the Holy Grail, this is a very silly idea, so silly in fact that Monty Python made a movie about it. To replace it, I have taken the Cauldron of Clyddno Eiddyn from the pages of Bernard Cornwells excellent Warlord Series. The Cauldron is one of the Thirteen Treasures of Britain. When they are all gathered and a certain rite is performed the Gods will returned. Having the Cauldron is the first step. It is very difficult to get the Cauldron as you will have to pass through unfriendly Powys territory and fight the Bloodshields. Sending a hero unit to get the cauldron isn't a great idea because they will most assuredly get caught and slaughtered by the Bloodshields.

2 ) Negotiate an Alliance with King Cuneglas

This is the only period of negotiation in the game. You and the Powys will be given a chance to make an alliance. Building the Bring Back the Gods wonder after you retreive the Cauldron of Clyddno Eiddyn will assure that they at least sign a peace treaty with you. But if you end Part II with just a peace treaty they will probably break it later on. An alliance is the ideal but it is very hard to get, you should try.

The Other goals are secret at this time....you will find about them in the game. I have given you enough information to get you started, hopefully. The remaining three parts you will have to figure out on your own :).

------------------
IMPROVEMENTS
------------------

Hardly any improvements can actually be built during the game. Harbors and Sacred Groves about sum it up for the Dumnonians. The Benoic and Gwent can build Cathedrals too. For full information about Improvements that already exist see the pedia.txt

-----------
TERRAIN
-----------

The terrain I have taken a strange approach. As you know each terrain has two special resources. Some of these resources actually don't give any help whatsoever. Some do.

Saxon Land -
Land held by the Saxons. There aren't any resources because this replaces Grassland. I have given the saxons their own terrain because in the later parts of the game I pump up their prodcution.

British Land -
Land held by the Britons. Resources are Deer and Timber, both of them are beneficial.

Valleys -
Awful for defense. Resources are Sheep and Wetlands, both benefical.

Forest -
Good for defending and production. Resources are Shrines and Boars. Shrines are also airbases and can be used to paradrop to and from. Both are beneficial.

Hills -
Great for defending! A fortified unit on a hill is almost unbeatable. Special resources are Merlyn Hawks (beneficial) and means spirited dwarves called Duergar (not benefical).

Marshlands -
For all the swampy areas on the coasts there is Marshland. Its not easy to move through. Resources include Lizards and Spices. Both beneficial.

Stones-
This is Stonehenge. Best defense there is. No resources though. Because it only takes up four squares there aren't any special squares. This is replaced with grassland in part 5.

Evergreen -
Mostly in the north, not much around Dumnonia but you'll see a lot of it. Resources are Gems and Groves, both are beneficial.

Raided -
Raided land is bad all around, it by itself produces a little bit of food, but thats it. The Resources are Wheat (more food) and the Raiders (not beneficial).

Ocean -
Oceans were very dangerous to sail on. Except if you are a cheatin AI!! Resources are Fish (same effect as in normal game) and Shipwrecks (not beneficial).

THE MAP

I made this map myself, It is not available anywhere. If you want to use it go ahead.

THANKS TO
-----------

This part isn't done yet but so far I must thank -- Giant Squid, William Keenan, and Jim Winchell for Playtesting, Harlan Thompson for the great Ancient Units pack, Blackclove for his Units, Alex Mor for almost all of the great artwork you see :), And above all to Bernard Cornwell for writing the magnificent Warlord Trilogy (The Winter King, Enemy of God, Excalibur), on which this scenario is loosely based.
